A good nights rest is important for our bodies. During sleep our body repairs itself. This is especially important if our bodies are injured as the damaged tissue needs time to heal. Problems with sleeping will increase stress responses in the body and increase muscle spasm. We should try to make sure our bed is supportive and comfortable. If your mattress is too soft your back will not be supported and if it’s too hard it does not ‘give’ at the shoulders and hip therefore you will loose the natural curves of your spine.
The bigger the bed the better. The more space you have to move around the better. If you find you mainly sleep on your back you might find putting a cushion under your knee helps to release the lower back. Don’t use too many pillows under your head as this will increase the arch in your lower back and strain your neck. If you sleep on your side make sure that you keep your spine aligned. A cushion between your knees can make you more comfortable., especially if you suffer from sciatica.
