A question I hear regularly...
  • Should I feel sore after a session?

Let me explain....
It is really common to think that if you don't feel sore the next day after your Pilates sessions that you are not really getting a good workout.

But....Im so pleased to tell you that this is not true!

One of the amazing things about Pilates is that it targets your deep muscles.

If we go to the gym to lift weights or do fitness classes, much of the soreness you feel is due to tearing your muscle fibers, due to this you need to allow rest time in between your sessions for your muscles to repair ready for your next session.

In Pilates, we work in a more gentle, controlled way so that we don't tear muscle fibers and don't need those long recovery times.

So the next time you think that you are not sore the next day, please just stop and ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you feeling more mobility in your body at the end of your sessions ?
  • Are you noticing that your carrying out activities of daily living with more ease? (this could be simple things like hanging out the washing or even just putting your socks on!)
  • Have you found that you are living with less aches and pains in you body?
  • Have you been consistently practicing Pilates so that your body is getting more used to the types of movements that used to make you sore in the very beginning of your pilates journey?
  • At the end of your routines do you feel more aligned and stronger and most importantly proud of the work you just done in your session?

If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions above, you're doing an amazing job and your sessions are doing what they're supposed to be doing meaning....we are following our Pilates principles of encouraging natural movement which is the vital foundation for avoiding injury and maintaining fitness levels.

Remember..Always trust the process - as you continue doing the routines, you'll continue to build strength and your ability to recognise that your body is working hard without always being sore.!
